Where the Bamileke stool comes from
In the Grassfields of western Cameroon, carved stools were prestige objects. Museum collections describe ornate stools that raised kings, chiefs and titled women above the ground, with richer decoration signalling higher rank.
The stools in our collection take up those forms (openwork lattice, animal and figurative supports, round carved tops) as furniture for living with today.
